About this book
Rainer Maria Rilke approaches the sculptor Auguste Rodin through the accumulated work of his hands. This essay considers how years of observation and patient craft can give stone and modeled figures the energy of living things. The opening places Rodin's art beside ancient sculpture in the Louvre and the carved creatures of medieval cathedrals, drawing attention to the movement that can inhabit an apparently still form.
Rilke then studies human gestures, including the small transitions between reaching, holding and letting go. His account treats these movements as expressions of experience, uncertainty and longing, and considers how Rodin gives them sculptural shape. Published in English translation in 1919, the book offers readers interested in art a poet's sustained interpretation of physical form and feeling. Its focus on individual gestures provides a way to look more closely at sculpture.
