About this book
Art is a book by Auguste Rodin. A chapter headed The Beauty of Women speaks of that fine old house known as l’Hôtel de Biron, which stands in a quiet street on the left bank of the Seine in Paris and has, since the suppression of the sisterhoods, been occupied by several tenants, among whom is Rodin.
Rodin says of all busts by Houdon that this sculptor understood how to render the transparency of the pupils better than any painter or pastellist. Asked whether resemblance is a very important quality, Rodin answers, “Certainly; indispensable.” The text quotes a speaker who calls useful all that gives us happiness and says there is nothing in the world that makes us happier than contemplation and dreams. Looking at some with Rodin, the writer speaks of the over-finished drawings which the public usually approve, and Rodin says that the crowd cannot understand a daring impression which passes over useless details to seize only upon the truth of the whole.
