About this book

At Oak Villa, Mary Livesay builds her days around a household she has long managed. After caring for her aged parents, she remains in the suburban home and begins teaching her neighbors Annie and Dora Maitland. Her niece Clara Beaumont, whose father has recently died, also comes under her care. Clara's diligence makes her a promising pupil.

Mabel Ellis brings a different temper to the villa. She likes looking through its books and examining needlework, but she takes little interest in the flowers and resents what she hears as a warning from her aunt. Through the contrast between Clara and the Ellis children, Mrs. Perring turns domestic scenes into lessons about early education, habits, and the responsibilities of adults. Conversations about conduct and Aunt Mary's hope that Mabel will join Clara in visits to poor people make this a moral tale for younger readers, with teaching and family life at its center.
