About this book

At Cherry Court School, twenty girls share lessons, friendships and the anticipation of an annual feast among the cherry trees. Mrs. Clavering's small school prizes manners, conversation, languages and music. Among its older pupils are lively Florence Aylmer and Kitty Sharston, a newcomer whose affection for her companions goes hand in hand with impatience at the rules. Their talk of the approaching holidays brings family circumstances into the school garden, including Florence's worries about her mother's limited means.

A scholarship gives the girls a more urgent reason to compete. Kitty, Florence and Mary Bateman each want the award, even as they recognise what another pupil's disappointment would mean. Mary's account of her hopes for education and a future as a governess places the contest beside questions of money and women's work. L. T. Meade's school novel offers readers friendship under pressure and a close look at the opportunities a good education might provide.
