About this book
Aunt Rachel is by David Christie Murray. In the preface, a critic, otherwise almost altogether friendly, protests, in reviewing a recent book, that no rustics ever would, could, or will talk in real life. The writer says that he does not profess to deal with the average rustic, but deals, and loves to deal, with the rustic exceptional, the village notable and wiseacre.
An old man says that he was up in London rather better than six-and-twenty year ago, and that he heard Paganini. The old man says that's all the story, and that he never cared to touch a bow again. Reuben had disappeared with Joseph and was already engaged in spoiling the village sport. Rachel looks out at a man through a door that opens slowly, trembling from head to foot, with signs of tears in her face.
