About this book

A sleeper accustomed to dreams of old buildings finds himself beside a village that seems to belong to another age. William Morris fills the scene with freshly carved church windows, timber houses, orchards and small strips of cultivated land. The narrator walks among people dressed for a medieval world, with a pen case at his belt and armed villagers gathering nearby. Published in 1888, this historical fiction takes the peasant rising of 1381 as its subject.

The middle passage brings the village's fellowship into view through arrivals, invitations to supper and preparations for the night. Will Green offers hospitality, while John Ball seeks a quiet conversation with the stranger. Political demands sit beside the ordinary needs of food, shelter and friendship. Paired with A King's Lesson, the dream narrative offers readers a way to consider social power through both public speech and the closely observed texture of village life.

About the author

William Morris

William Morris (1834-1896) was an English poet, designer, and socialist whose wallpapers and textiles helped define the Arts and Crafts movement. Late in life he turned to prose romances set in imagined lands, and those books are now regarded as foundations of modern fantasy literature.
