Backlog Studies is by Charles Dudley Warner. The contents run from the first study to the eleventh study. The first study opens with the words: The fire on the hearth has almost gone out in New England; the hearth has gone out; the family has lost its center.
One passage says a wood-fire on the hearth is a kindler of the domestic virtues, and brings in cheerfulness, and a family center. Another passage says that the Parson says he never would give a child sugar-coated pills, and that Mandeville says he never would give them any. A further passage says that the little cottage over which Polly presides with grace enough to adorn a palace is still small outside and smaller inside.
