About this book

The account attributes the accidental discovery of roasting, or rather broiling, to a manuscript whose story introduces the preparation of roast pig. The swineherd Ho-ti goes into the woods to collect food for his hogs and leaves his cottage in the care of his eldest son Bo-bo. Bo-bo lets sparks escape into straw, and the resulting fire spreads through the cottage until the building is reduced to ashes.

The narrator’s praise of roast pig specifies a young, tender suckling less than a month old rather than a grown animal. The narrator insists that the pig must be roasted and calls boiling a sacrifice.
