About this book
Greenwood outlaws, royal authority and the loyalties of Little John meet in this collection of traditional ballads selected and edited by Frank Sidgwick. The volume gathers Robin Hood poems alongside tales of Adam Bell, the Outlaw Murray and seafaring figures such as Captain Ward. Sidgwick's introduction considers how the popular woodland champion became entangled with historical claims and later versions of the legend.
The verse retains older spellings and turns of speech, with explanatory notes beside unfamiliar words. In the passage from Robin Hood and the Monk, Little John urges his companions to recover their courage before setting out with Much. Their encounter with a travelling monk shows how loyalty and danger drive these short narrative scenes. Readers interested in folklore or the sound of older English storytelling can follow both the poems and the editor's discussion of their origins.
