About this book

Gaveston returns to London after receiving a letter that invites him to share the new king's favour. Edward welcomes his friend, grants him titles and places royal resources at his disposal, while Lancaster, Warwick and the Mortimers challenge the decision. Their arguments turn personal attachment into a struggle over who may direct the crown. Christopher Marlowe presents these encounters as a verse drama, with speeches, asides and stage directions exposing the ambitions behind public claims of loyalty.

The London and Westminster scenes move between private affection and open confrontation. Gaveston imagines entertaining the king with music, poetry and elaborate performances; the nobles answer royal favour with threats of armed resistance. Spenser gains a place beside Edward, and a message from the barons demands that the king dismiss him. Readers can follow the pressure that court favourites place on authority, and the way pride and grief sharpen political conflict.
