About this book
A letter from Marshal Foch presents Colonel Ardant du Picq as an exponent of moral force, calling that force the most powerful element in the strength of armies. The letter says the conclusions are amply verified in the American Army's experience during the last war, notably in the campaign of 1918.
The discussion of mounted combat stresses that a man on horseback must force both himself and his beast to march against the enemy, while flight is easy. The account argues that men at the rear of an infantry mass cannot push those in front unless the danger behind them is greater. A critique of battle rules warns that basing new rules on successes would lead to lamentable errors.
