About this book
The Battle of the Marne by G. H. Perris contains twelve maps, including a general map showing the armies’ positions on the eve of battle and German lines of approach. The account describes the Marshes of St. Gond as largely reclaimed and canalised, and says that the clay bed limits traffic at all times to the good roads crossing it. The discussion quotes General Bonnal’s charge that the British Army, rather hesitant after its checks, lost time in movements dictated by prudence and did not give all the help desirable in time.
The account says the Moroccan chasseurs generally made the most rapid progress, with officers leading them through cornfields and orchards, swords raised in gloved hands. The account identifies Neufmontiers as the first village carried by assault and describes the advance reaching the stronghold of Telegraph Hill near Penchard.
