About this book
Bearslayer by Andrejs Pumpurs (1841-1902) is presented as a free translation from the unrhymed Latvian into English heroic verse by Arthur Cropley. The table of contents lists cantos titled, among others, The Revelation of the Bearslayer, Bearslayer Begins His Life as a Hero and The Struggle against the Invaders. The foreword says most societies seem to have epic heroes and events that define them as they like to see themselves.
A note on pronunciation says that because of the strict iambic metre of the translation, every second syllable must be stressed. A heading says Laimdota tells Bearslayer how the Devil sank the castle, and Laimdota speaks of reading from a parchment about the Sunken Castle.
