About this book
The title page identifies the work as an epic poem translated from the original Danish into English verse by William Edward Frye. The account of Balder tells how Frigga obtained protective oaths but omitted the mistletoe because the little plant appeared too insignificant to harm anyone. Lok digs up the plant and makes a spear, before going in search of Hædur, the blind twin brother of Balder.
The verse follows Balder and Mimer toward Urda's mystic stream, describing a rocky source concealed by berries and flowers and surrounded by thick pine forests. The poem places Skulda beside the stream as guardian of the book of fate, with enormous wings, a green garment and a forehead bearing a broad fillet.
