The title page reads Beautiful Lakeland by Ashley P. Abraham. The contents list chapters on Windermere and Ambleside, on Grasmere and Rydal, and on Thirlmere, Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite, among others. The author writes that from end to end and from side to side of this favoured spot there is scarcely an unlovely feature, if we except the quarries and mines which mar some few localities. The text says that the exquisiteness of proportion impressed Wordsworth so greatly that he actually compared the beauties of Lakeland with those of Switzerland.
The text names an island close at hand on the left as Lord's Island, once the home of the Earls of Derwentwater. The text names Walla Crag as the precipice above the island and says Lady Derwentwater fled with the family jewels up a steep rift in its face. The author recalls a very unpleasant experience of the author's own on the Needle, on the bitterly cold Christmas day of 1897, when a party of three climbed to its apex.
