Invisible Cities, published in Italy in 1972, is a novel by Italo Calvino. It is framed as a conversation between the Mongol emperor Kublai Khan and the Venetian traveller Marco Polo. Polo describes to the aging emperor a series of cities he has visited, fifty-five in all, each with an invented name and an extraordinary character, grouped into eleven themes.
The cities work as images of memory, desire, signs and the ways people live together, and the descriptions are interrupted by short exchanges between the two men. It is a short book that is usually counted among Calvino's finest works.
