About this book
Boston’s busy waterfront and a crowded family home provide the starting point for Robin McKown’s biography of Benjamin Franklin. Written for younger readers, it follows a boy whose appetite for books exceeds the opportunities offered by two years of schooling. Work in his father’s candle shop leads to an apprenticeship with his brother James, where printing, borrowed books and experiments in prose become part of his education. Small episodes, including a kite pulling him across a pond, give a concrete sense of his curiosity.
The chapters widen from these beginnings to civic work, scientific interests and public affairs. In the later excerpt, Franklin moves among British political figures, visits Ireland and worries about the treatment of the American colonies. Family letters and advice to his son-in-law keep domestic concerns alongside the larger political story. Readers interested in American history can see how habits formed in a workshop connect with the judgments of an experienced public figure.
