About this book
Before the campaigns and the presidency, Courtenay follows a Virginia boy learning mathematics, managing horses and measuring land. George Washington begins with his family, schooling and attachment to his older brother Lawrence, then describes his work surveying the lands of Lord Fairfax. The opening presents careful habits, courtesy and practical skill as preparations for public responsibility.
The later chapters follow Washington through the American Revolution and into the presidency. In the account of the Delaware crossing, icy water, slow transport and missing detachments make the demands of command concrete. The narrative also introduces allies such as Lafayette and the engineer Thaddeus Kosciusko. Its direct language and admiring portrait offer an accessible introduction to Washington, while showing how a patriotic biography links personal character with the founding of a nation.
