About this book
Bert Lloyd's Boyhood, with the subtitle A Story from Nova Scotia, is by J. Macdonald Oxley. The preface describes the writer's aim as attempting a picture of boy life in Nova Scotia a fifth of a century ago.
The text calls No. Five Fort Street a right pleasant house to live in, with right pleasant people, and names Mr. Lloyd, the head of the household, as also the head of one of the leading legal firms in Halifax. Cuthbert's mother is of quite a different type, standing just five feet in height and weighing precisely one hundred pounds, and Bert, looking her all over, says very gravely: What a little mother you are! Bert, with satchel strapped upon his back, approaches the school, and Rod, who had been in hiding behind a porch, springs out upon him, snatches the cap off his head and flings it into the middle of the street.
