About this book

Halifax's crowded tenements and busy waterfront form the starting point for Terry Ahearn, an Irish boy growing up in poverty. His father spends much of his earnings on drink, while his mother scrubs to keep food on the table. Terry prefers the company of other boys on Long Wharf to steady work, yet his readiness to defend a smaller child suggests a generosity beneath his mischief. He also has an ambition: to become a gentleman and give his mother a more comfortable life.

J. Macdonald Oxley combines this story of a boy's prospects with maritime adventure. A later scene places Terry aboard the Minnesota during fighting in Hampton Roads, carrying water to injured sailors while enemy fire strikes the ship. These contrasting settings give the book its particular interest: a lively account of waterfront childhood develops into a test of courage, practical kindness and service to others.
