About this book
The book is titled Bertha, Our Little German Cousin and names Mary Hazelton Blanchard Wade as its author. The preface says that when the word Germany comes to mind, we think at once of ruined castles, fairies, music, and soldiers. The text says Bertha and Gretchen had never seen any white bread in their lives, for they had never yet been far away from their own little village.
In one scene Bertha asks "Did you always know how to make those cakes, mamma?" and the answer is "My good mother taught me when I was about your age, my dear." A passage says an old man rowed Siegfried across in a boat and that he was the god Odin, who loved Siegfried and wished to see him succeed.
