About this book
Mixed pickles presents itself as a story for girls and boys. Bryda closes the stable door and climbs a ladder with her heart beating unusually fast, without stopping to consider what her grandmother would say. The loft has a raftered roof and little windows through which sprays of ivy push their way into the room.
Roger works outside his door, busily weaving the cane seat of a chair he has made. Roger describes the previous day as a kind of wedding day, with the world dressed in green, dewdrops for jewels and birds singing a hymn. A reply to Bryda's remark that cats are not working folk suggests that keeping lonely people company may be the work cats do.
