About this book
A hotel clerk's mistaken room assignment brings Winston face to face with Beth Norvell, the leading actress in a travelling theatre company. Exhausted after a night on the railway, she has fallen asleep in the room he expects to occupy. Her appearance stirs a puzzling sense of recognition, and his curiosity soon leads him to ask the company's manager for a job. Randall Parrish begins this Western romance among actors, shabby lodgings and interrupted mining work.
The story also moves into the workings of rival mines. Convinced that ore is being taken from the Little Yankee, Winston needs proof from the Independence shaft. A disguise and a risky midnight plan carry him underground while his allies keep watch above. Readers interested in frontier fiction will find theatrical life alongside mining disputes, personal loyalties and scenes of tense, practical action.
