About this book

On the dusty road to Santa Fé, Mehitabel Crump stops her unreliable motorcar beside a starving stranger. Her cargo includes boxes marked as explosives, and her blunt talk gives way to practical kindness as she offers him food and drink. Henry Bedford-Jones opens this Western with a meeting between two weathered people against the mesas and mountains of New Mexico. Crump's memories of mining and her impatience with changing frontier customs give the scene its rough humor.

Thady Shea's struggle with drink brings a different kind of pressure to the frontier setting. His confrontation with Fred Ross turns a room containing coffee, a cup and a bottle into a place of sudden danger. The novel combines frontier adventure with close attention to personal frustration and resolve. Readers can find both the landscape of the Southwest and conflicts expressed through forceful, sharply different voices.
