About this book
The book by Harriet Beecher Stowe brings together Betty's Bright Idea, Deacon Pitkin's Farm and the First Christmas of New England. Betty's Bright Idea describes the holy time settling down over the great roaring, rattling, seething life-world of New York in the good year 1875.
Scene II shows an attic room, neat and clean but poorly furnished, where a pale, thin woman works on a vest. A speaker in the scene asks whether he did not go a whole year and never touch a drop, and says he is now kicked out for falling once. A speaker asks his mother for her Bible in exchange for his own, and says that if he ever gets into heaven it will be through her. A verse has a speaker say Mary, mother, I am thy child, Tho' I be laid in stall; Lords and dukes shall worship me.
