About this book
The Wives of the Dead is by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Two young women sit together by the fireside, nursing their mutual and peculiar sorrows.
The recent brides of two brothers, a sailor and a landsman, have had tidings of the death of each on two successive days, by the chances of Canadian warfare and the tempestuous Atlantic. One of the sisters, whose emotions were influenced by her mild, quiet, yet not feeble character, begins to recall the precepts of resignation and endurance which piety had taught her. Goodman Parker reports that a man travelling from the eastern jurisdiction told him that thirteen men reported slain are well and sound, and that the husband of the listener is among them. Margaret lies in unquiet sleep, her young cheek rosy-tinted and her lips half opened in a vivid smile.
