About this book
Bibliomania in the Middle Ages, by F. Somner Merryweather, is a book of sketches of bookworms, collectors, Bible students, scribes and illuminators. The sketches run from the Anglo-Saxon and Norman Periods to the Introduction of Printing into England, with anecdotes illustrating the history of the monastic libraries of Great Britain in the olden time.
The text says that history will not prove the claim that in the middle ages the monks were wine bibbers and slothful gluttons, and names Offa, the Saxon king, and Cædman, the rustic herdsman, as both monks. The text says that an abbot built a monastery at a place called Jarrow in the year 684, and that no sooner was it completed than he went a fifth time to Rome to search for volumes to gratify his darling passion.
