About this book
Amenities of Literature consists of sketches and characters of English literature by Isaac Disraeli, in a new edition edited by his son, the Earl of Beaconsfield. The preface speaks of a history of vernacular literature that has occupied the writer's studies for many years, meant not as an arid narrative of books or authors but as a trace of the rise, progress and decline of public opinions.
One passage describes how Anglo-Saxon manuscripts were long neglected, and how Archbishop Matthew Parker added Asser's Life of Alfred, printed in the Saxon character, to his edition of Thomas Walsingham's History in 1574. Another discusses critics' treatment of the monk Lydgate, quoting the remark that he has been oftener abused than read. A further passage turns to Shakespeare as an actor and says two actors recorded that he had instructed them in playing Hamlet and Henry the Eighth.
