About this book

Bird of Paradise is by Ada Leverson, dated 1914 and dedicated to Ernest. Its chapter titles include Excuses, Lady Kellynch, Rupert at Rumpelmeyer's, Futurism, Russian Ballet, An Anonymous Letter, Tango and Private Fireworks.

In one conversation Bertha and Madeline discuss arranging for Madeline to meet Rupert, with help from Nigel. Bertha says her mother-in-law, Lady Kellynch, believes humanity consists of her own family, which includes Percy, whom Bertha is married to, and Clifford, the boy at school. A passage mentions singular typewritten letters that Percy stops receiving, and another has a woman give a coloured account of a quarrel with Rupert Denison, saying he was never anything but like a brother or a sort of schoolmaster.
