About this book

Bertie Wooster needs a new valet after discovering that his previous servant has been helping himself to silk socks. Jeeves arrives while Bertie is struggling with a difficult philosophy book chosen by his fiancée, Florence Craye. His quiet competence soon makes an impression, but even his restrained responses suggest that he has opinions about Bertie's clothes and plans. The opening establishes a household in which the employer has plenty to say and his servant often understands much more.

Published in 1925, this collection brings together ten comic short stories. Bertie's talkative narration turns social obligations, family pressure and ordinary confusion into elaborate troubles. In a Paris episode, his friend Biffy has forgotten the name of his hotel and recalls losing contact with a woman he hoped to marry. Readers can enjoy the gap between Bertie's confident account of events and the clues that expose how little he has grasped.
