About this book

An imagined view from an aeroplane provides the starting point for James T. Nichols's survey of distant countries. Published in 1922, the volume moves through China, Japan, Korea, European nations, Palestine, Egypt and South America in short geographical chapters. Nichols combines accounts of his visits with descriptions of local industries, farming, buildings and customs, often comparing unfamiliar places with features of the United States.

The opening chapter credits China with inventions and engineering achievements, from paper and printing to canals. Later passages turn to the wood carvers and religious theater of Oberammergau, then to small farms, plum orchards and arrangements for helping neighbors in Serbia. These changes of scale, from national resources to village practices, make the book useful for readers interested in how an American traveler described the world a century ago. Its judgments also reflect the assumptions of that period.
