About this book
Elihu Burritt takes the slower road through Britain, looking closely at the farms, villages and people that railway passengers see only in passing. His account grows out of a promise to send observations home to an agricultural club in Connecticut. Written in the informal manner of letters to those neighbours, the book combines a walking tour with an American farmer's interest in British methods of cultivation.
Visits to large farms bring discussions of steam power, drainage, irrigation and the costs of agriculture. Country inns, birds, hedges and old houses also claim his attention. In Houghton, he describes a school gathering where children scramble for apples, nuts and small cakes scattered across a lawn. These scenes give the travel narrative a social texture alongside its practical observations. Readers interested in rural life and changing landscapes can follow how Burritt connects everyday hospitality with the work of the countryside.
