About this book

Born at Schoenhausen in Brandenburg in 1815, Otto von Bismarck enters this biography through the history of his family and its ties to the Prussian rulers. James Wycliffe Headlam then follows his career through revolutionary politics, diplomatic appointments, the formation of the North German Confederation and the establishment of the German Empire. Published in 1899, the account also considers the new empire's alliances and economic reforms.

The political narrative pays close attention to negotiation. In the discussion of the Treaty of Gastein, competing claims over Schleswig and Holstein lead to a compromise between Prussia and Austria. Bismarck's visits to France bring Napoleon III into the calculation, showing how a decision in one court affects choices elsewhere. Headlam's preface explains his use of memoirs, letters, speeches and documentary collections.
