About this book
A shore visit in October 1717 brings the Earl of Derwentwater and his companions to the Atlantic island of Trinidad. Mary Hamilton admires its wild scenery, while her uncle prefers the grounds of his English estate. Their easy conversation gives way to unease when mysterious music and laughter echo among the rocks. B. Barker sets this pirate adventure in a world of merchant ships, remote landings and uncertain loyalties.
Suspicion also surrounds Captain Rowland of the Gladiator. Mary distrusts him, and a later account traces his wealth to earlier dealings with buccaneers. When a pirate brig approaches, his order to lower the ship's colors astonishes his officers and crew. The contrast between a peaceful island and danger at sea gives the story its momentum.
