About this book

A Fourth of July crowd fills the sawdust streets of a lumber town in the opening story, and a visitor follows the rivermen to the booms for a birling match: two men balanced on one spinning pine log until one is thrown into the water. Jimmy Powers loses, then shows the narrator the spike marks his rival left across his foot.

Stewart Edward White gathered thirteen stories here in 1904, in two parts. The first six belong to the logging camps and river drives of the northern woods, with titles such as The Riverman, The Foreman and The Scaler. The seven stories of the wild life move west, where in one tale a frontier hotel keeper named Billy Knapp has to deal with an outlaw called Black Hank and a nervous stranger guarding a valise.

White writes in a plain, quick style full of camp talk, working detail and dry humor, and the book suits readers who enjoy Westerns, outdoor life and the speech of working men.
