About this book
On the Circle L range, Kane Lawler prepares to send a thousand cattle to Willets after the autumn round-up. His plans depend on an agreement made with Jim Lefingwell, whose successor as cattle buyer, Gary Warden, has promised to honor it. Lawler trusts a man's word, while his mother and foreman raise doubts about the new buyer. Their conversations set questions of fair dealing against the practical demands of moving and selling a large herd.
Charles Alden Seltzer gives this Western novel a working ranch setting, with corrals, branding, trail conditions and cowboys' talk woven into the opening. A later scene brings Lawler to a cabin during a fierce norther, where he helps a woman recover and questions arise about two men caught cutting a fence.
