Bones Don’t Lie is the third book in Melinda Leigh’s Morgan Dane series, the romantic suspense and legal thriller franchise that she launched in 2017 alongside her other ongoing series. Morgan Dane is a former prosecutor who has returned to her small upstate New York hometown of Scarlet Falls to raise her three young daughters after the death of her husband in Iraq, and she is rebuilding her legal career as a criminal defense attorney. Her partner in the series, both professionally and increasingly personally, is the private investigator Lance Kruger, a former Scarlet Falls police officer who left the department after a personal tragedy of his own.

In this entry the case begins when an old friend of Lance’s mother contacts the firm. Lance’s father, Vic Kruger, disappeared from Scarlet Falls more than two decades earlier, leaving behind a wife who has spent the years since then waiting for news that has never come. New evidence has emerged that suggests Vic was murdered rather than the runaway the local police long assumed him to be, and the bones that have just been recovered may finally allow the family to bury their dead and figure out what actually happened. The case pulls Lance into territory he has been avoiding for his entire adult life, with personal stakes that complicate his usual professional approach.

Melinda Leigh handles the romantic suspense and procedural balance with practiced confidence. Morgan and Lance are well developed adult protagonists with real lives, real family obligations, and real reasons for the slow building romance that has been developing across the series. The case itself provides the suspense plot, with the cold case structure giving Leigh room to dig into both the contemporary investigation and the long buried Scarlet Falls history that the bones are starting to expose.

For longtime Morgan Dane series fans, Bones Don’t Lie is a satisfying entry that develops both the central romance and the wider mythology of Lance’s family. For new readers, the series rewards being read in order starting with Say You’re Sorry, but the novel can be picked up as a standalone with some loss of context.
