About this book
Benjamin Franklin's education through work, reading and experiment opens Osgood E. Fuller's collection of biographical sketches, short papers and verse. Published in 1884, the volume brings public achievements into conversation with private habits and family influence. Its contents range from Abigail Adams and Mary Wordsworth to Caroline Herschel, Florence Nightingale and Michael Faraday. Fuller treats setbacks as part of building character, giving the collection a strongly Christian view of effort and purpose.
An account set in northern Iowa shifts attention to a widowed farmer's wife and her four sons. Keeping the family farm means balancing the boys' schooling with the work needed at home; their evening conversation reveals both their ambitions and their concern for their mother. This domestic scene gives the book a more personal scale beside its celebrated figures. Readers interested in nineteenth-century ideas about education, useful work and family responsibility will find those concerns expressed through individual lives.
