About this book
The Stonechat entry describes the male's black head, red breast and patches of pure white on the wings, contrasting with the female's more sober plumage. The Whinchat may be distinguished at a considerable distance by the white streak over the eye. The Stonechat's eggs are pale blue, with the larger end often faintly speckled with reddish brown. The Stonechat builds its nest in a furze-bush and perches on the topmost twigs of shrubs. The breeding pair seems not to wander far from home and allows an approach close enough to distinguish the tints of its plumage.
The account explains the Peregrine's name by the bird's wide dispersion through most regions of the globe.
