About this book
The book offers a key to the common birds of the plains of India, intended to help people identify at sight birds they are likely to meet. The contents list structural peculiarities, colour and habits as bases of classification for the birds described. The second-edition preface credits Mr. G. O. Allen with notes and suggestions and says that the additions and corrections were compiled almost entirely by him.
The Black-throated Weaver-bird entry distinguishes the species by a yellow patch on the side of the neck, a black breast and a short tubular entrance to its nest. The Black-throated Weaver-bird is described as comparatively rare and not found in S. India.
