About this book

Franklin T. Baker gathers Robert Browning's shorter verse for readers learning to interpret poetry closely. His preface explains the selection's intended use with students of high school age, and the volume provides an account of Browning's life, a discussion of his poetry, and explanatory notes. The contents range from The Pied Piper of Hamelin and poems of love to reflections on music, faith, and the work of artists.

In Rabbi Ben Ezra, Browning explores the inner life through reflections on age and purpose. Its speaker weighs youth against age, considers the worth of unrealized purposes, and imagines human experience through the figure of a potter shaping clay. Readers can follow these arguments alongside the collection's varied voices and rhythms. Baker's notes and interpretive prompts make this edition useful for studying how a poem's images carry its ideas, while the shorter selections offer manageable pieces for attentive reading.

About the author

Robert Browning

Robert Browning (1812-1889) was an English poet who turned the dramatic monologue into his signature form, letting flawed speakers convict themselves in their own words. Long overshadowed by his wife, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, he was recognized late in life as one of the major Victorians.
