About this book

Selections from the Poems and Plays of Robert Browning, in the Lake Library Edition, is edited with an introduction by Myra Reynolds. The contents list the selections Songs from Paracelsus, Cavalier Tunes, The Lost Leader and How They Brought the Good News. The text says the most important event in the life of Browning during this period was his acquaintance with Miss Elizabeth Barrett, and that in 1844 she brought out a new volume of poems which he saw and greatly admired.

The text says Miss Barrett, owing to long-continued invalidism, had lived in almost entire seclusion, and was not at first willing to receive Mr. Browning. One poem asks What of Rafael's sonnets, Dante's picture? and has the lines While he mused on love and Beatrice, While he softened o'er his outlined angel. A commentary says the new life of art came when men strove for something new and original, even though their first attempts were crude.

Robert Browning

Robert Browning (1812-1889) was an English poet who turned the dramatic monologue into his signature form, letting flawed speakers convict themselves in their own words. Long overshadowed by his wife, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, he was recognized late in life as one of the major Victorians.
