About this book
A lonely boy watches a young garden worker from his window, feeling irritation and envy at the same time. The worker pulls weeds, performs handstands and climbs fruit trees, turning ordinary labour into a display for his spectator. In George Manville Fenn's children's novel, the garden itself receives close attention: onion beds, flowering pear trees, currant bushes and ripening plums make a vivid setting for the boys' uneasy interest in each other.
The narrator, Grant, later talks with old Ike about wanting to grow up and deciding to tell Mr Brownsmith about trouble he has faced. Brownsmith also urges him to take pride in learning to be a gardener. These conversations place honesty, work and companionship beside the boys' quarrels and misunderstandings. Readers interested in stories of English country life will find a child's account of social differences and the practical lessons offered by older people.
