About this book
An under-gardener's hopes meet a sharp refusal at the start of George Manville Fenn's A Life's Eclipse. John Grange openly tells James Ellis that he loves his daughter Mary, but the estate agent considers John's wages and position inadequate. Daniel Barnett, a fellow gardener, competes for advancement as well as Mary's attention. At The Hollows, conversations about an ageing head gardener and a damaged cedar turn ordinary estate work into a test of pride, courage and authority.
Later scenes show John working while blind, judging plants by touch and arranging orchids for Mrs Mostyn's visiting friend. His skill earns praise, yet a ruined display brings suspicion and anger into the conservatory. Written as juvenile fiction, the novel joins courtship and jealousy to questions of fair treatment and personal worth. Readers interested in stories of working life will find garden labour, social ambition and the difficulty of having one's abilities properly recognised woven through its domestic conflicts.
