About this book
A sack of gold dust and a birthday celebration stir a sleepy Yukon saloon into life. Elam Harnish, known as Burning Daylight, arrives in Circle City with the confidence of a man accustomed to hard travel and high stakes. Miners gather around him, gambling tables grow busy, and his energy sets the dancers moving. Jack London's 1910 novel introduces a frontier figure whose standing rests on endurance, risk, and years spent searching for gold in the Arctic country.
The story also gives Daylight room to notice another kind of wealth. Riding through California woodland, he pauses beside a spring and an enormous lily, then follows trails among redwoods, flowering hillsides, and small meadows. His pleasure in the landscape sits beside a troubling awareness that climbing now tires him. Readers interested in frontier fiction will find both the noise of mining camps and closely observed moments when ambition gives way to wonder at the natural world.
