About this book

An injured traveller watches his companion walk away across the Canadian Barrens, leaving him to face the cold and hunger alone. Jack London's collection opens with a struggle measured in small practical decisions: finding a route, protecting matches and making damaged footwear serve a little longer. The man knows where supplies should be waiting, but reaching them depends on both physical endurance and his determination to believe that help is still possible.

Elsewhere in these short adventure stories, danger comes from people as well as the landscape. The middle excerpt puts Edith Nelson and her husband in a sudden confrontation with an armed man, then shows Edith trying to restrain her husband's fury once the immediate threat has passed. Readers interested in survival fiction will find close attention to bodily effort, fear and the difficult boundary between defending a life and losing control.
