About this book

A wealthy young wife takes up her diary with a practical argument for having a career: it gives her something fresh to discuss with Henry, her husband. Anita Loos builds this 1928 comic novel around a narrator whose confidence, peculiar spelling and explanations turn money and ambition into social comedy. Her account of making a historical film brings together a director's elaborate sets, a writer's psychological ideas and Henry's insistence on a moral lesson.

The same voice measures family life against the attractions of New York, where art means meeting artists as well as owning ornaments. Dorothy supplies sharper comments and, in the middle excerpt, announces her hopes of entering the Follies at the Algonquin hotel. Literary celebrities, theatrical connections and the pursuit of wealthy patrons give readers a view of fashionable life filtered through two women's very different ways of talking about it.
