About this book

Rain and darkness greet Dorothy and Harlan Carr when they arrive at the house Harlan has inherited in Judson Centre. Married only four weeks, they discover a bewildering collection of wings, kitchens and bedrooms, furnished in a style Dorothy finds painfully dreary. Harlan hopes the property will give him room to write books, but their modest savings and unfamiliar surroundings already test their confidence.

Myrtle Reed turns this household into the setting for a humorous novel about marriage, hospitality and literary work. Noisy children, singing and music interrupt Harlan's writing, while Dorothy receives advice from Mrs. Dodd, who has been married seven times. The comedy grows from competing habits and expectations within a shared home.
