About this book

Recovering from illness, Caleb spends a summer with his grandmother in the Sandy River country while his parents live in Boston. Around her house, a rocky valley, a stream and wooded slopes offer plenty for a curious boy to observe. Even the bright buttons on his new jacket become an experiment in reflection, leading to a surprising sight on the hillside. His grandmother, known as Madam Rachel, guides his attention from small discoveries to Bible reading.

Jacob Abbott combines a children's story of country life with direct lessons in reasoning, conduct and Christian faith. Caleb also watches Raymond at work with oxen and tries using a small saw while trees are cleared for a fence. These patient, concrete scenes give modern readers a close view of how an earlier children's writer turned everyday play, practical work and family conversation into moral teaching.
