Chapter IV, The Ride to Town, tells of Lucy, Miss Anne and Royal setting out in the carryall to go to the town, to do some shopping. Royal sat upon the front seat to drive, and Lucy and Miss Anne sat behind. Miss Anne says that among various things she is going to buy a book for Lucy.
In a story, the gentleman's gardener listens to a woman for a few minutes, leaning on his hoe, and says he is responsible to his master. Royal says he does not see how the story explains the difficulty, and the answer is that the gardener was under obligation, but not under obligation to her. Royal tells Thomas how they might have hid in the bushes and growled like two bears, and Lucy answers that they mustn't frighten them. Royal tells Lucy he is sorry she fell down and says she had better let him go along with her, but Lucy says she wants to go and do the errand herself alone.
